Treated Timber Sleeper Incised Brown (UC4) – 100x200mm x 2.4m

Railway sleepers are traditionally a length of timber that "sleeps" or supports the rails in railway tracks. However, due to their strength and size, nowadays wooden sleepers are popular for use in garden projects such as raised beds, short retaining walls, terracing, steps and other decorative elements. Though traditionally made with oak, modern railway sleepers are now usually made with coniferous wood such as spruce or redwood, as a more versatile and cost effective solution that still has significant longevity.

Incised timber is timber that is treated in combination with small incisions along the exterior of the timber to allow any treatments to penetrate further and therefore have more effective resistance to rot and pest. It allows the treatment to penetrate into the inner “heartwood” of a length of timber. Timber treated to UC4 allows these timber sleepers to be used in direct contact with the ground such as raised beds and fence posts, and is expected to last roughly 15 years.

Ourwooden sleeperscome in a standard length of 2.4m. If you are cross-cutting your sleepers to size to fit any outdoor project, it is strongly advised to further treat the cut ends to ensure sufficient moisture and pest resistance, and avoid placing cut ends in direct contact with the ground.
